Balancing Ballots & Belief 030526

This message explores how Christians should engage with politics while remaining faithful to Jesus Christ.

Core tension: Politics shapes daily life, but Christians must engage without compromising their faith. Faith and political views cannot be separated—Christian beliefs should inform political thinking.

Biblical foundation: Although the Bible doesn’t mention “politics,” it teaches principles such as submission to authority, justice, humility, being “salt and light,” and prioritising obedience to God above human authority.

Dual citizenship: Christians belong to both God’s kingdom and earthly society. Navigating this requires wisdom, prayer, and commitment to Christ.

God’s sovereignty: God is ultimately raises up all governments and rulers. Political systems are tools within His greater plan, and nothing can override His will.

Limits of politics: Government cannot solve humanity’s deepest problems—only God, through Jesus Christ, can bring true transformation. The New Testament emphasises changed lives through the gospel, not political reform.

Role of Christians:

Live as examples of Christ-like character.

Respect and obey governing authorities where possible.

Speak against injustice and uphold human dignity.

Engage responsibly in civic duties, including voting.

Voting as stewardship: The right to vote is a gift from God and should be exercised wisely, guided by biblical values (truth, justice, life, righteousness), not apathy, fear, or blind loyalty.

Primary allegiance: Loyalty must always be to Christ above any political party or nation. When laws conflict with God’s commands, Christians must obey God.

Mission priority: The church’s main role is not political reform but spreading the gospel and transforming hearts, which ultimately changes society.

Hope and conclusion: Political systems are not humanity’s saviour—Jesus Christ is. Christians are called to engage thoughtfully in politics while remaining focused on their identity as citizens of heaven, living as ambassadors of Christ with integrity, love, and truth.
